Potent Potables

So maybe I watch too much Jeopardy

As of this weekend, I've undertaken another revision of MP. One agent recently suggested straight up that I rewrite it in first person. Another agent said that she thought it was "brilliant," but needed to be less literary in order to draw in readers of fantasy. I'm not gonna lie, I resisted that suggestion for awhile, but I'm on board to at least give it a shot. (And it'll keep me busy while I wait for word from other agents reading the current version.)

As I started playing around with changing to first person, I found that I was really liking the first person perspective. It flows naturally and, since I've been writing in first person for my latest WIP, I'm in that zone now anyway.

I don't know that I necessarily have a preference as reader, but I tend to find more first person in YA. I think probably because it helps a younger reader feel more connected to the main character.

So I'm throwing out a question: when reading, do you prefer first or third person? (I'm not even broaching the subject of second person.) Do you prefer writing in first or third? And why?

I prefer writing in third person b/c I like the flexibility of telling the story from multiple POV if need be.

That said, first person is fun to write.

I like reading in third for the most part. Sometimes 1st gets a little too personal for my taste.

It's great news to hear your experiment is working. Here's hoping that whatever you do, it snags you total success!

Hi Abby! I agree with you about reading in first person--it can feel like you're too much in the character's head sometimes.

OTOH, I tend to write from only one POV for the most part, so it seems like I might as well be writing in first person. Either way, it's a fun experiment for now!

As a unrepentent head hopper, I could never write in 1st. I always like to know what others are thinking. If you are digging it, that is all that matters though!!!

You know, I have to say I've never really tried to write from more than one POV, but maybe I'll give it a shot in the next book I write. You've inspired me! :)

I prefer to read AND write in first person. I actually like being so far in the characters head so I can experience all of their emotions very clearly. I get way into it.
