After watching HBO's debut of "Bored to Death" last night (a rather amusing show about a writer who is having trouble writing his second novel and decides to take on cases as a private detective in his spare time), I was chatting with some of the folks over at the QT Forum today about the difficulty of writing the second novel.
As I've written previously, I've been taking a break from book two of MP to work on VOID, my current work in progress. It's not going as smoothly as I would like. My first novel practically wrote itself. I typed away for hours without pause, with very little of the actual plot in mind, and it all came together like magic (including the plots for the next two books in the trilogy).
But VOID isn't moving along quite as nicely. It's not that I don't know what's going to happen or that my characters aren't speaking to me. I've got the entire plot worked out, but it's the details that are eluding me. The getting from point A to poing B is, like, so time consuming (obviously). So, it's time to either put this book on hold and start a new one (plausible, since I'm really digging two different ideas at the moment) or suck it up and bang some words out, even if I end up having to rewite some of it later.
And as a parting note, here is my favorite exchange from last night's "Bored to Death":
